2008

On Good Friday 21st March the Severn Valley Railway fully reopens to passenger trains following multi-million pound repairs to the line after flooding damage during the summer of 2007.

Car number
M52064 emerged from Kidderminster carriage works after a C3 overhaul.

2007

A dramatic year for the Severn Valley Railway with significant infrastructure damage being caused by a severe storm during the evening of 19th June. The section of line between Bewdley and Bridgnorth had to be closed for repairs right in the middle of the DMU 'Saturday Evening Land Cruise' season. Co-incidentally the DMU did make a full line run on that fateful very warm day only a few hours before the storm happened. However, the 'Cruise' continued to run for the rest of the season between Kidderminster and Bewdley only.

On a more positive note car number M52064 went into Kidderminster carriage works for a C3 overhaul.

This year saw evening DMU charter trains run in conjunction with the SVR's new Wizard Weekend event.

Car number

Railcar50 event held on the Severn Valley Railway and was recognised as being a huge success. Organised by members of the DMU Group (West Midlands) and assisted by many other DMU preservation organisations across the UK. The longest heritage DMU train to ever run in preservation took place on the Saturday evening, a formation of 12 cars.

Two stored out of use powered railcars, numbers M51941 and M52064, were the first to be secured. These were actually brought along the national rail system from Doncaster, via Tyseley (a train depot in Birmingham), to the SVR at Kidderminster.

More than 17 years have elapsed since the founding of the Group by it's original members.

A gap was identified in the railway preservation movement all those years ago whereby these type of trains were being withdrawn and replaced by so called new style 'Sprinter' models. It was, and, quite controversial at the time, proposed to obtain a DMU for use along the SVR line before they all disappeared forever.

An exploratory meeting of interested Severn Valley Railway members was called at Kidderminster station. The DMU Group thus evolved and decided to obtain a two car 'class 108' unit. This specific class of train did not run along the SVR in days of old but were adjudged to offer the best benefits to passengers, including the fact they could be put into operational use almost immediately.
